Hillbilly

If you want to understand both the things that make us laugh and the truly unbearable sadness that exists in rural Appalachia, you have to see the documentary Jesco the Dancing Outlaw. I assure you that you will not be sorry you did it. Fact is, even though we like to think about the warm fuzzy Beverly kind of hillbilly, the real deal is a bit heartbreaking.

Sorry if this became downer day. Just saying...

I also suggest you see My Brother's Keeper.

Casie's look:

I don't know if they are officially hillbillies, but since they do participate in a jug band, I think they qualify. I am speaking of the otters from Emmett Otter's Jug Band Christmas. Today I am playing the mom. See my calico dress, my shawl, my head scarf? I am soooo hillbilly. As the song goes...Your nails won't break and your toes won't stub. You'll never get a fever when there ain't no hole in the washtub......

*just in case you want to hear the song for yourself.

Jilli's look:

*apparently Billy Ray Cyrus agrees with Jilli's assessment of Hillbilly-wear.

"When I think of hillbillies I think of plaid shirts and jeans. I have the jeans and boots on today but my wardrobe is sadly lacking in plaid. So I went with a plaid-ish scarf today. It's a little bit like a bandana. By the way my favorite hillbillies are Billy Hill and the hillbillies at Disney. Hill-larious!

  1. My mom's favorite movie ever is Emmett Otter and his Jugband Christmas! (Do I reference my mom a weird amount or what?) I love that you did the mom. Cute headscarf.
